  • MMA Training BURNS!

“What the heck are you talking about, MMA training burns?”

It not only burns, but MMA training will elevate your grappling prowess and help you grind down your opponents.

    Here’s what I mean…

In this case, the MMA in MMA training doesn’t stand for mixed martial arts, but Mixed Metabolic Acidosis training.

This is just a fancy sounding acronym to describe a specific style of training that I use to train the lactic acid energy system.

It’s ‘Mixed’ because you use different types of exercises, it’s ‘Metabolic’ because as a side effect it really ramps up the metabolism and it’s called ‘Acidosis’ because that’s what happens in your muscles due to the training and why it burns like hell!

So for the rest of this article, when I mention ‘MMA training‘ I’m talking about the new acronym I just came up with, not our favourite sport. šŸ™‚

It’s also an extremely effective method that will help any mixed martial artist improve their grappling power, helping you hold tighter submissions and dominant positions.

Obviously technique is king but we can’t all be black belts so sometimes you just need to physically dominate your opponent and this will help you grind them out and wear them down, a la Jon Fitch or Cain Velasquez.

Not to mention the metabolic effect that will help you get LEAN.

But it’s a powerful method not to be overused. Let’s get into it…

  • Fat Loss Revolution?

The fat loss market is filled…

… with hype, exaggerated claims, and downright lies…

It’s a big reason why over the past couple of years I’ve been shy to promote my fat loss programs.

    Fat Loss Hype
    Example of the hype.

I never wanted to be grouped in with some of these shady characters because one bad apple spoils the bunch.

But I can see that I may be seen in this light by some, and after thinking about it, I can understand why…

At times, I’ve emailed about other people’s programs.

When I make a recommendation, 98% of the time, I stand behind it 100%.

Generally, when you purchase something through my recommendation, a nutrition product, fat loss program, whatever, I’ll make a commission.

Now I don’t promote everything I come across, because I get asked WAY MORE to promote than I actually do. When you develop a big following, people try to get in on the action.

It can actually get really annoying, for example, a guy emailed me a month ago to promote his new ā€˜fat loss workout for moms’ and I was like, ā€œAre you serious? How many moms do you think I have on my MMA strength and conditioning newsletter list?ā€

But here’s why I feel I’ve got to issue an apology to you…

Over the past couple of years, there have been a few fat loss programs in particular that I’ve emailed about that I wasn’t fully, 100% behind.

For example, one author in the spring of last year, whom I will not name, sent me a package with a small bribe gift in it.

Even though I had no intention of promoting his fat loss program, I did, I think mainly because I felt I ā€˜owed him’.

Right when I sent the email, I felt guilty about it…

Thankfully nobody bought it because I’m guessing you saw right through my email recommendation, since it wasn’t genuine.

There were some other odd times where I’ve emailed about programs that I wasn’t fully behind; sometimes because the authors are friends and I’m just helping spread the word, or sometimes for a favour, or sometimes just for the commissions.

At times, I feel like I’ve acted like a shady used car salesman.

It's true! It's only got 20,000km on it… Trust me!

And for this, I offer you a sincere apology.

An even BIGGER apology goes to those who have purchased a program on my recommendation and ended up not satisfied.

I’m sorry for wasting your time and hard-earned money.

I know you trust me to provide you with solid advice about MMA S&C and general health, fitness, fat loss and nutrition advice and with these types of actions, I deserve to lose that trust.

But I’m not going to leave it at that, I’m going to leave you with a promise to gain your trust back.

As I prepare for my wedding this summer, I’ve been talking a lot about expectations with my fiancĆ©e, and one of the conversations we’ve had about ā€˜keeping promises’ is what has fueled this email.

It’s one of the most important things to her and isn’t just about big things, like being faithful, but also of not breaking little promises like finishing my day on time (I can be a bit of a workaholic, what can I say, I love this stuff).

So here are some of my promises to you, my loyal blog/newsletter reader:

    • I promise to only recommend programs, products or anything else that I would recommend to my best friend or brother
    • I promise to give 100% honest reviews and opinions about products that I come across, pointing out both the good and bad points of it and letting you know who I think it’s for
    • I promise to disclose when I will make commissions on any of my recommendations

And here’s the BIG ONE, the one I’m most excited about…

I promise to institute a new era of marketing of my own products that is 100% transparent, honest and real giving you actual DATA and results from my programs, as much as possible.

This, is the revolution in fat loss.

Why do I call this a revolution?

Because there will be zero hype, no lies, no stretched truths, only 100% verifiable data that you’ll be able to prove for yourself.

You’ll know exactly what my programs are capable of, instead of just seeing the best, hand-picked results.

I’ll explain more in my next update. Be sure you’re on my newsletter list for when that comes out.

I just want to let this sink in and hopefully we can restart our relationship on the right foot.

    We cool?

    Let me know below.

  • [Jon Jones] Where Does He Stand?

Jon Jones – Where Does He
    Stand Among Champions?

    Article by Eric Wong

No fighter since Anderson Silva first KO’d Chris
Leben has got me so eagerly anticipating his
next fight as I am with Jon Jones.

Anderson Silva KO of Chris Leben UFC

It doesn’t matter who he faces next, I want to see Jon Jones fight just to see what he’s gonna do.

Not only is it fun to watch him pull crazy shit out of his bag of tricks, but Jon Jones has one weapon developed far beyond his years.

    Only one question remains…

How much fight is there in this big dawg?

    Here’s what we know…

Jon Jones has literally steamrolled through opponents.

He’s ended his last 6 opponents in the UFC, winning his first 2 UFC contests via UD.

In my mind, he’s Top 3 when it comes to creativity and skillset diversity inside the octagon (Who are your top 3? My others are A. Silva and Jose Aldo, with eager anticipation of Anthony Pettis’ next bout).

No opponent has come close to hurting Jon Jones…

… let alone defeating him (Hamill doesn’t count).

But there’s just that one thing we haven’t seen…

On one hand, we’ve got champs whose chin, heart and composure have been tested.

Silva took a 4.5 round beating from Chael Sonnen
and stayed alive long enough to take advantage of
the opportunity and end Sonnen with a triangle…

    Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen

The Octagon was spinning and the lights were
dimming for Frankie Edgar in his last fight against
Maynard, and he made a miraculous survival to
fight to a hotly contested draw…

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard UFC

On the other hand, we’ve got champs who have succumb to defeat when their armor was penetrated…

Who can forget GSP getting caught by Matt Serra…

Or Brock Lesnar’s best Mary Lou Retton impression vs. Cain Velasquez…

Not to mention the revolving door to the light heavyweight throne prior to Jon Jones’ ascension.

Where, oh where does Jon Jones stand?

Do you think he’ll be more like Silva and Edgar when the inevitable time comes where he gets truly tested, or will he crumble and lose some of the shine that his model career has shown thus far?

Does Jon Jones Have a Big Fight Inside Him?

Do you think Jon Jones has big fight inside ready to come out when he’s really tested?

  • Jon Jones’ Most POWERFUL Weapon

Jon Jones absolutely dominated the legend Mauricio Shogun Rua and no one is more deserving of holding the UFC Light Heavyweight belt than he.

Not only did he totally dominate Rua and pretty much everyone else he’s faced inside the Octagon, he does so with creativity.

For a quick recap of some of Bones’ career highlights, check this vid and make sure your jaw doesn’t fall off your face:

Jones’ rise in mixed martial arts has been nothing short of meteoric.

Here are a few reasons, in no particular order, why Jones has gotten SO good SO fast and is the youngest man to ever win a UFC belt…

His Body Shape and Size (anthropometrics for you biology nerds)

Jones is 6’4″ tall and has ridiculously long arms and legs and broad shoulders, making him a physical freak in the LHW division.

You can’t train these factors and Jones’ has been blessed with a great physical make-up no doubt.

Don’t think for a minute though that body shape and size are the key.

We’ve seen guys with similar body’s before, guys like Kendall Grove.

    So physicality is useless without…

    Endurance, Strength, Power, Co-ordination, Agility,
    Quickness, Speed and Balance
    (the 7 Biomotor Abilities)

I first learned of the biomotor abilities through Tudor Bompa’s book Periodization, then took the concept further through my study of Paul Chek’s material in his Advanced Program Design course.

Basically, you can rate a sport’s requirements of each of the abilities listed above and then develop your training program accordingly.

The thing is, with MMA, it pretty much requires relatively high levels of each biomotor ability, making the training program quite complex since it has to balance the development of each of these (sometimes competing) abilities.

For example, a marathon runner is one of the highest expressions of endurance, so an MMA fighter doesn’t need or want to be at that level, whereas powerlifting is the ultimate show of strength and likewise a fighter must be strong but doesn’t have to put up elite powerlifting totals.

Trying to be both an elite marathon runner and powerlifter is literally impossible.

So training and developing the abilities relative to the needs of MMA is key.

Jones has got an amazing blend of all of these biomotor abilities as shown in his fights.

Not only that, but it’s also…

His Ability To Rapidly Learn New Skills

I knew he was a wizard when I first heard that he learned skills from YouTube.

But it’s one thing to learn a new technique from videos, it’s another thing to use it in the Octagon.

As we’ve seen from his first couple of fights in the octagon to now, he’s been picking up and using new skills along the way.

When he first fought in the UFC, he showed off his flashy spinning elbows and kicks vs. Gusmao and some brutal takedowns/slams vs. Bonnar.

But now, he’s added new flashy moves, such as the Superman Lead Elbow and Leap Frog to Back vs. Bader.

More importantly, he’s added a whole lotta substance to his flash, such as the vicious elbows from top position vs. Vera and Hamill, his submissions vs. Bader, Matyushenko and O’Brien and now his complete arsenal of weapons were on display vs. Shogun.

Bottom line – the kid learns fast and he doesn’t stop learning.

But you’ve come here to learn about Jon’s most powerful weapon.

Ariel Helwani did an interview where I believe Jones himself reveals the key to his rapid rise.

The whole interview is worth watching, but the ‘secret’ is at 2:39. Check it out:

OK, now I have 2 questions for you:

    1. What do you think about this?
    2. What fight would you rather see, Jones vs. A. Silva or A. Silva vs. GSP?

Leave your answers in the Comments section. GO!

  • Don’t Get Ahead Of Yourself!

Here’s an email I just got from Rainer who’s been using my Ultimate MMA S&C program:

    “Hi Eric,

I took me awhile(2-3 weeks) to reply to you, since i received your email. I just started the program 2 weeks after i grabbed the Ultimate MMA Strength and Conditioning Program. Hope this lengthy email will worth your while reading it.

Now that I’ve finished the corrective phase last Sunday, I’ll start on the base conditioning phase tomorrow.

To be honest, at first I underestimated your corrective phase, thinking that it would be easy since I’ve been working out a lot in the gym.

After I gave it a try, the corrective phase exercises made me swallow my own word. I struggle to finish the upper limit of the exercises reps. Now, that taught me to trust my strength and conditioning coach. šŸ™‚

Aside from the exercise, your article about different type of stretching in the book, give me understanding of the effective way to do stretching. I had lower back problem(slipped disk), flexibility was a problem for me, I was really stiff after the recovery, I’ve been stretching without any significant result and normal stretching movement might agitate my lower back problems.

Using your stretching technique, my flexibility increases by a lot without agitating my lower back problem. My hamstring wall stretch when I first tried it, I could only stretch my leg about 45 degree from the floor, now I can almost stretch it up to 90 degree from the floor. This helps me a lot in my muay thai.

Additionally, your nutritionitsu gives me a whole difference perspective of what I should consume and also motivate me to fix my eating habit which is similar to sumo diet you pointed out. As results, my performance is improved in many aspects as well as my general health (Yeah, I feel really healthy now!).

    Hope this explains.

    Rainer”

  • Hormones and Body Fat

If you think you’re carrying a lot of body fat on a certain area of your body, perhaps you’ve got man-boobs or you carry all of your fat around your stomach, then you may be suffering from a hormone imbalance.

Thank the estrogen (or plastic surgeon).
Thank the estrogen (or plastic surgeon).

Your hormone levels direct where excess fat is stored on your body.

    Don’t believe me?

Then think about it – what makes a woman different than a man (other than the desire to own more clothes than necessary as my fiancee can prove)?

The big thing is the different levels of the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone.

Estrogen is the female sex hormone. During puberty, when estrogen levels ramp up, body fat starts accumulating in the chest and sometimes the bum, for some more than others.

Testosterone is the male sex hormone that as men, deepens our voice, hairies up our chest (and in some horrific cases, back, neck and shoulders…) and adds a whole lotta muscle mass so we can do impressive things for those estrogen dominant humans we’re always trying to impress.

[Wikipedia has more on sexual differentiation if you’re so inclined]

    Believe me now?

    Great, then let’s continue…

  • Shoulder Warmup Routine for FAST Hands

Whenever I travel, I make sure that I don’t give into the temptation to get fat and lazy and instead, keep working out.

As well, I do my best to eat well so I don’t feel like an absolute slug when I get back.

I recently took a short 4 day vacation to the Bahamas…

Definitely a much needed getaway from the Canadian winter and my body thanked me for exposing it to some sun!

Nutrition-wise, my fiancee and we brought some foods, which included my world-famous Cashew butter muffins as well as 6 cans of tuna…

  • Cheat Day Nutrition Tips

    Nobody is perfect.

Not you, and heaven knows not me.

I don’t meticulously count my calories or shun foods that I know aren’t optimal.

    I cheat.

But when I do so, it’s conscious and I enjoy it – I don’t feel guilty for indulging and neither should you, as long as you’re in control.

If you’re not in control, then you’ve got to work on THAT – don’t worry about being perfect, just get under control.

With that being said, here’s the video with my ONE TIP to survive your Cheat Day without setting yourself back too far:

    [jwplayer config=”512×288″ mediaid=”2424″]

Just because it’s Cheat Day, doesn’t mean you have to eat absolute junk! You can, but I tell my clients/athletes, “On your Cheat Day, just don’t go crazy.”

And here’s my ‘secret’ Whole Wheat Crepes recipe that my man Jeremy who’s in my MMA Ripped program (and has cut 13 lbs of fat in 5 weeks so far) made me share that is not only more delicious than any ‘cheat’ breakfast you could have, but is super easy to make and healthy as hay…

  • MMA Training Workouts With NEGATIVES?

    Wear a clean shirt please.

Today we’re going to talk about negatives and their value in your MMA training workouts.

This all came about because last blog post I shared a funny story that happened to myself and Claude at the gym.

I also asked for YOU to post your gym etiquette breaking stories and got some hilarious responses.

But this one from Mark takes the cake:

“Once I had a guy ask me for a spot as he was doing ā€œnegativesā€ on the bench. He loaded up the bar with 225, I thought it to be light for negatives, but later I was very gratefull he only used 225.

He got down on the bench and when he gave me a signal I lifted the bar off the rack. He slowly lowered the bar to his chest, I grabbed the bar and began to lift it up, as I struggled with the weight I couldn’t figure out why it was so heavy, I finally got it where I could rack it.

He said ā€œa couple moreā€, I politely told him I couldn’t because I was exhausted. I looked in the mirror, my face was purple, eyes bloodshot, every vein in my neck was sticking out.

I asked him, as I was gasping for air, how he does negatives, still trying to figure out why the weight was so hard for me to lift, after all I was ā€œspottingā€ not working out. Standing there not even looking like he had just completed a set, he informed me the correct way to do negatives was when the spotter pulled the weight up, he would be pulling down as hard as he could!!!

I saw a couple of guys laughing and found out they had spotted him before.”

I’m sure glad I wasn’t spotting this guy!

Anyway, this story raised the question, “Are negatives good for MMA training?”

    Here’s the simple answer…
