  • Advanced Gym Etiquette Tips

So Mr. Patrick and I were training at a new spot to get him ready to do battle with Daniel Roberts at UFC 129…

[Ninja is a tough guy and we’re going to be 100% ready for him come April 30th.]

Anyway, the reason we changed training venues is because I wanted to do some specific things this camp and they have the equipment to facilitate these things – Olympic platforms and an indoor track – which we don’t have at our regular facility.

And here’s the funny thing that happened when we were doing Pullups on a bar attached to a Power Cage…

  • DRUGS in MMA

Being a trainer to UFC fighters and other pro mixed martial artists gives me a behind the scenes look at the fight game that a lot of people aren’t privy to.

Like what it’s like to be inside the octagon looking out.

Yeah, I know, I’m a lucky dude and I’m grateful for all of the good luck that’s come my way.

After watching the Strikeforce card, where Fedor fought closer to how he looks, and seeing Josh Barnett and the ever-hypertrophying Alistair Overeem a few times during the night got me thinking about the topic of drugs in MMA.

    Now you may be wondering…

“Is it common for top MMA fighters to use banned performance enhancing drugs (PEDs)?”

  • BIOMECH Breakdown: Silva’s Front Kick Part II

By popular request, here’s the video I promised you guys if you dropped 40+ Comments on my inaugural-first ever-premier-debut edition of BIOMECH Breakdown!

Seems like everyone felt the same way about Silva’s KO of Belfort that I did.

Cool – we’re on the same page. šŸ™‚

Before we get to the video, there are a few key points to keep in mind…

  • BIOMECH Breakdown: Anderson Silva’s Front Kick

Watching Anderson Silva’s front kick knockout of Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 almost made my head explode.

He’s by far the most versatile and unpredictable striker in MMA history, proven by knocking opponents out with different weapons, such as:

    • Forrest Griffin by straight right punch from his pocket while backpedaling
    • Chris Leben setup by straight punches and finished with a knee
    • Rich Franklin twice predominantly by knees in the clinch
    • James Irvin by straight right after catching a right kick from Irvin
    • Nate Marquardt by right hands while Nate was on the ground on his back

OK so maybe looking at that it looks like Silva definitely likes his straight right hand.

But still, the various circumstances and situations in which he uses all of his weapons is unparalleled in the sport, not to mention his ability to evade strikes through matrix-like head and body movement.

Knowing that the front kick is going to be the talk of the MMA universe, I figured I’d take a closer look into Silva’s technique on a biomechanical level.

  • Can Old Guys Get Results Too?

I often get asked by ‘old’ guys if my Ultimate MMA program works for them…

I guess it depends not so much your age, but your physical ability and maybe even more importantly, your mindset.

Here’s an actual email I got from Jorgen who is 45 years old:

    “Hello,

I am well into training and I have finished the 1 phase. I am well into the 2 phase of training; I have gained half a kilo of muscle mass, and lost some fat, and that is very good news for a man who are 45 years old. I am looking forward to the 3 phase, where I am going to take up again crazy 8, and get to play with a ball…

The MMA training program was just what I was looking for, but could not find any where. The instructors at my gym are good, but not that good…

    Jorgen”

So yes, the Ultimate MMA S&C program works for guys in their 40’s, as long as you don’t feel like an old man, you can build some muscle and lose fat with the young bucks.

    Hello,

I am well into training and I have finished the 1 phase. I am well into the 2 phase of training; I have gained half a kilo of muscle mass, and lost some fat, and that is very good news for a man who are 45 years old. The MMA training program was just what I was looking for, but could not find any where. The instructors at my gym are good, but not that good…

    And then to the questions:

    • Why don’t you recommend using a Bosu Ball (half ball) for Prison Squats, Prone Bridges, and Side Bridges? That would give more Core Training for the muscles, epecially for the second time round. That means not the tapering phase, but when one is ā€œrestartingā€ once training.

  • 2 Kettlebell Exercise for KO Power and a Shredded Core!

I love experimenting with new exercises and when I was in the gym the other day messing around I came up with these 2 new dandies: the Kettlebell Side Plank and Swing and the Plank Saw.

Both are core exercises that target rotational stability – upping your striking power and especially targeting and strengthening your obliques and deep core muscles such as the multifidus and transverse abdominis.

Check out the video, pay attention to the form cues, give the exercises a go then let me know what you think:

  • Prinicples of Efficient Training

Efficiency is a word I love.

I define it as getting the job done with as little time and energy output as possible.

I mean, if you can get your desired result with 30 minutes of work, why spend 60 minutes of work?

The old saying, “Work smarter, not harder” is pretty good advice, but is trumped by, “Work smarter, and hard.”

So sharpen your saw AND saw with all of your effort…

As a mixed martial artist, you should love efficiency too, for numerous important reasons, which we’ll get to shortly.

But first, I’ve got a somewhat embarrassing story to share…

If you get easily grossed out or are weak of stomach, you may want to skip this post.

Otherwise, the story I’m about to share illustrates an important lesson.

    Still with me?

    OK – let’s have at it…
