    Easiest Weight Cut EVER

While my digestive system has returned to full power following my 1 week in the Dominican Republic, unfortunately, my Inbox has NOT.

    too_much_mail

I was buried under a lot of emails.

Bills. A bunch of questions. Back and forth between software developers working on powerDOJO features and upgrades. Numerous requests from a Russian girl named Olga who wants to be my friend.

I should get back to her.

And there was some really cool stuff, like this email I got from Donavin Hawkey, a mixed martial artist from South Africa:

    Good morning Eric

I have been a bit skeptical regarding training programs in the past as I have always battled with weight cuts for fights due to the walk around weight being too high and my body just not adapting to diets. I’ve tried various diets and programs and to be honest none have got the results that I did with the 8 week Ripped program. I started prepping 2nd Jan for an event in march and implemented the program in my second week of training.

My starting weight was 97kg (214pnds) with my goal weight being 89kg (195pnds) 1 week prior to weigh in, leaving a final cut (water cut) of 5kg (11pnds) for the final week.

1st 2 weeks I was down to 93kg (205pnds) which I maintained for a further 2 weeks. Weeks 4-6 I dropped down to 88kg (194 pnds) which was my initial target weight.

I was left with the option of simply allowing my weight to alter accordingly or increase my intake to maintain. I went with simply allowing my weight to alter accordingly.

Final week soon approached and my weight was sitting at 86kg (189pnds) which meant a simple salt bath on the day of weigh in and probably the easiest cut I have ever done.

By far the best program I have been through and definitely 1 I will repeat in future.

Total weight loss in 8 weeks = 30pnds

Many thanks for the awesome program.

    Awesome stuff Donavin!

He was also cool enough to send me this pic (I added the Before and After text, as any good internet fitness gUrU should):

    easy-mma-weight-cut

    .

This is great and Donavin’s results are on the more successful end of the range, but not out of the ordinary

But if you’ve been hanging around here, listening to me rap about MMA and S&C and all that jazz, you know that I’m more about performance than anything else…

So I emailed him back asking about his performance results.

    Peep our conversation:

DUDE – awesome results and thanks for sharing!

I’m wondering if you’d mind me emailing out about your results?

And if you could share any of the fitness results that’d be awesome.

And how did the fight go? Do you have a video?

I’d love to see it, win or lose.

    Thanks for the feedback Donavin.

    ——————————

    Eric

Yeah Cool no problem at all.

Resting heart Rate 60bpm down to 48bpm

Body fat 17% down to 9%.

Video are available on www.EFCAfrica.com . Fights will be premiering on CSI Sports in the States soon.

Fight went well but unfortunately opponent had superior Jits and I got caught with a reverse arm bar. Strength was definitely at another level and was evident in the clinch.

    Deadlift Max 2 reps @ 418pnds to 4 reps @ 460pnds

    Bench Max 2 Reps @ 260pnds to 2 reps @ 308pnds

Because I’m a Chinese, let me mathematically break down a few of Donavin’s performance #’s for you because, well, I can’t help myself.

Hold on a sec while I bust out my abacus…

    abacus

    OK let’s do this:

Resting Heart Rate Reached 48 bpm (Down 12)

This means he surpassed the resting HR ‘Pro level’ I specify in the CAGE Cardio PDF.

    Brilliant.

    Cardio?

    Check.

    Body Fat Down 8%

    That’s 1% a week, which is awesome.

    But this is even awesome-r:

214 lbs x 17% = 36.4 lbs of fat and 177.6 lbs of lean muscle

189 lbs (because he cut 4 lbs of water) x 9% = 17 lbs of fat and 172 lbs of lean muscle

    36.4 – 17 lbs = 19.4 lbs of fat dropped

    177.6 – 172.6 lbs = 5 lbs of lean muscle dropped

Waaaait a minute – he lost muscle mass? That’s not good!

From the calculations, it looks as though this were true.

Now this might be worrisome, but it must be taken in context, specifically, the context of strength and cardio:

    Deadlift Max 2 reps @ 418 lbs to 4 reps @ 460 lbs

    Bench Max 2 Reps @ 260 lbs to 2 reps @ 308 lbs

He was already strong, but check out how much more strength he gained in 8 weeks!

Plus with the Resting HR improvement, it’s clear that that he improved both his strength AND cardio at the same time.

Last but not least, MMA is a relative strength sport, so improved strength combined with decreased weight is a GOOD THING, regardless of where that weight comes from.

No point in hanging on to muscle if it’s not going to do anything for you and just use energy.

The other thing to note about body fat calculations is that they’re not always 100% accurate, so the calculation could’ve over-estimated his starting lean mass, while under-estimating his ending lean mass. I’m guessing that happened.

    This is the important lesson…

When you’re tracking your progress, whether you’re a fighter or you’re just interested in having a lean, ripped and athletic physique, you must take various measures.

Don’t put all your Easter eggs in one basket, you silly wa-bbit.

    Measure your body composition.

    Measure your strength.

    Measure your cardio.

These are all important factors to both health AND performance.

And these are all things I show you how to measure in the MMA Ripped program.

We go through it all and I walk you through the process step-by-step.

But I don’t just show you how to measure these things. I show you how to take them to the next level.

Like I said, Donavin’s results are on the higher end of the scale, but they’re not out of the ordinary.

Even if you achieve 50% of what he did, think about how much farther along you’ll be?

    Exactly.

So get off the fence and join Donavin and the hundreds of others like him who have completed the 8 Week MMA Ripped Training Camp.

In 8 weeks, you’ll emerge a NEW, stronger, better conditioned, and leaner man.

  • MMA Ripped 3WO Guest Blog

I know you were all sitting around waiting for my 3WO guest blog… I’m sorry it took so long.

I started my 3WO a couple weeks back and got through my first strength workout and the sparring session. That Wednesday, I had a tattoo appointment that I had forgotten about when I began the 8WO, so I had to hold off for a couple of days.

The next week I started 3WO over again and absolutely blasted it. My strength was through the roof and my endurance has never felt so good. Again, I ripped through the sumo deaf lift + rollout in one set with no breaks. This has to be my biggest achievement to date.

The Saturday following my ‘live sparring’ session, I did what was called ‘The 2012 Ride to Conquer Cancer Celebration Ride’. It was where all previous RTCC Riders and new riders to the ride got together to simply ride. We did a 38km ride through Vancouver and I am proud to say that I was the first to finish. It wasn’t a race by any means, but I kept up with the leading pack and when we turned that final corner I was in the lead. WOOO HOOO!!

I have to say though, I cheated a little bit with my diet. It was tough trick or treating with my 3 year old on Halloween without snagging a few of the little chocolate bars.

How did you all make it through Halloween cheat free?

Well, I am stoked for 2WO and look forward to bringing you some serious results!!

    MMA Ripped 4WO Guest Blog

Well 4WO has come and gone.

This is a week that has some major pluses and prior to this time around had some major minuses. I love the switch chin-ups and the Dumbbell Split Jerk. I absolutely used to hate the sumo deadlift + rollout, however this time around I absolutely loved them and blasted through the 50 that I had to get done.

As I stated in my 5WO blog, my strength has gone up tenfolds, plus my cardio is right there. I am doing all of my sparring sessions at the pro level and none at the amateur level.

The diet has been on point up until now, lets hope I keep at er and get the best out of MMA Ripped.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

  • MMA Ripped 6WO Guest Blog

This week was a tough one to stick with the whole nutrition plan, as up here in Canada it was Thanksgiving. I spent the entire Thanksgiving weekend in a very small town in British Columbia called Silver Creek.

Now, onto the training portion of things. In the sixth week I feel the strength portion of things increasing like crazy, I absolutely love the ISO pushups and pullups. When it comes to the sparring sessions, I rock through them with not a heck of a lot of effort. I have a feeling that in 5WO, the extra reps are going to put me through some grueling challenges.

I don’t know if any of you can help with some tips, but during one legged side-bridges, I find my hips ache quite a bit. I have a tough time holding for any longer than 10 seconds.

I will now mention the Thanksgiving FEAST. I didn’t over indulge, however I did have quite the turkey high. I ate a little bit of mashed potatoes and had a bun. Want to know the funny thing about eating those things though, I felt very sluggish following those extra carbs.

Because of this program, I now know what foods do for my body and what I can and can not eat.

    Keep it locked for 5WO.

This is a week where things start to get into a groove. I usually feel more comfortable getting into the gym, as well as the nutrition side of things is all getting sorted out.

Lets get into that a little bit. Nutrition… most people think, “Hey, I’m going to hit the gym everyday, why don’t I have a 6-pack?” Well nutrition is almost the guaranteed reason why 90% of those folks out there that hit the gym daily don’t have one. At this point, I do not either, but that’s because I was a little sidetracked prior to hitting up my 8WO. I am back on the train now. I have my cheat day, that Eric gives us. However, I like to call them earned meals, like my good buddy Mike Dolce told me about.

The workouts this week were fairly straight forward, as they were almost the same as 8WO, but with different reps. I added a few things though. Following my strength workouts, I do a couple sets of biceps on Day 1 and triceps on Day 2. I guess this is just the wannabe bodybuilder side of me, wanting to keep those muscles engaged, as there aren’t a ton of arm exercises at this point.

The one aspect of the workouts that i find challenging this week are not the strength days, but instead the LIVE Sparring day. That added 10 seconds is a bit of a mind blast. I believe it’s not the body that is not capable of that extra 10 seconds, but your mind is not used to it. Keep your mind in check and push your way right to the end.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that I am a road bike rider as well. Every year I do the BC Cancer Foundation’s Ride to Conquer Cancer and this coming year will be the 5th time a ride. I do this because cancer has played a huge role in the life I live today. Enough about that, I was only mentioning this, as I ride my bike to and from work every day as well, which is an added workout in itself.

Well there is 7WO. Next week I will throw up a few other goodies for you to dig your teeth into.

  • MMA Ripped 8WO Guest Blog

You guys are probably wondering why this post isn’t written by Eric Wong, well I am going to tell you. I was asked by Eric to write a weekly blog detailing my experience with MMA Ripped.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Jeremy Brand and I am a 31yr old from Vancouver, BC, Canada. I have a beautiful family, with three kids (17,15,3)… yes that’s quite the gap and no it wasn’t a mistake. The three year old is my daughter and the other two are my step-kids. I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with West Coast BJJ here in Vancouver and am currently a three stripe blue belt. One of my passions is MMA and since that is the case, I decided to create an MMA blog. It has turned into more than a blog, in fact we have partnered with the USA Today Media Group, as well as FOX Sports. Check it out at MMASucka.com.

This isn’t my first go-round with MMA Ripped. Many of you may know me as a graduate from the pilot session. I did fantastic with it and have pushed through three other rounds of it since… well 3.5 as some family issues came up. Unfortunately, I let it get the best of me and I’ve lost some of my muscle and stamina that I had following in the past. I plan on kicking MMA Ripped’s butt this time and keeping that weight off.

The first question I was asked when starting MMA Ripped this time around was, “What are your goals?” I had to think about it for a while, but a light bulb sort of clicked and I had it. I wasn’t wanting to just lose weight and get a nice, ripped and chiseled body this time around. My goal is to have great stamina in the gym when I’m rolling. I’d love to lose some weight and look great, but that is not the overall goal.

I had to change my schedule around a little this week to get all of my workouts in, but I did. I get up prior to work, at 6:30am and hit the gym so that I can get it out of the way.

Next week I will get into some nutrition and more.

  • Why Being Different is Good

About 2 weeks ago a buddy of mine talked to me asking if I wanted to play hockey in a ‘beer’ league once a week because his team needed a couple of players.
    baby-hockey1

For those of you who weren’t born with a hockey stick in his hand like we are in Canada, a ‘beer’ league is simply an adult hockey league, where generally the focus is more on drinking beer after the game than playing hockey. And that beer is usually of the Molson or Labatt varieties.

I thought about it for about 2 seconds and decided to get back on the ice and see how I was. It would be a good time, I haven’t played in 2 years and there were a bunch of guys I knew from high school on the team.

Well our last game was last week and here’s what happened.

I walked into the dressing room and started getting ready and 2 of my buddies from high school said something to the effect of, “Wong, you’re fucking ripped, are you on the Bruce Lee diet or something?”
