Like his personality or not, no one has been as dominant or exciting to watch as “The Spider”.

No fighter since Anderson Silva first KO’d Chris
Leben has got me so eagerly anticipating his
next fight as I am with Jon Jones.
It doesn’t matter who he faces next, I want to see Jon Jones fight just to see what he’s gonna do.
Not only is it fun to watch him pull crazy shit out of his bag of tricks, but Jon Jones has one weapon developed far beyond his years.
Only one question remains…
How much fight is there in this big dawg?
Here’s what we know…
He’s ended his last 6 opponents in the UFC, winning his first 2 UFC contests via UD.
In my mind, he’s Top 3 when it comes to creativity and skillset diversity inside the octagon (Who are your top 3? My others are A. Silva and Jose Aldo, with eager anticipation of Anthony Pettis’ next bout).
… let alone defeating him (Hamill doesn’t count).
But there’s just that one thing we haven’t seen…
On one hand, we’ve got champs whose chin, heart and composure have been tested.
Silva took a 4.5 round beating from Chael Sonnen
and stayed alive long enough to take advantage of
the opportunity and end Sonnen with a triangle…
The Octagon was spinning and the lights were
dimming for Frankie Edgar in his last fight against
Maynard, and he made a miraculous survival to
fight to a hotly contested draw…
On the other hand, we’ve got champs who have succumb to defeat when their armor was penetrated…
Who can forget GSP getting caught by Matt Serra…
Or Brock Lesnar’s best Mary Lou Retton impression vs. Cain Velasquez…
Not to mention the revolving door to the light heavyweight throne prior to Jon Jones’ ascension.
Where, oh where does Jon Jones stand?
Do you think he’ll be more like Silva and Edgar when the inevitable time comes where he gets truly tested, or will he crumble and lose some of the shine that his model career has shown thus far?

Before we get to the video, there are a few key points to keep in mind…
Watching Anderson Silva’s front kick knockout of Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 almost made my head explode.
He’s by far the most versatile and unpredictable striker in MMA history, proven by knocking opponents out with different weapons, such as:
OK so maybe looking at that it looks like Silva definitely likes his straight right hand.
But still, the various circumstances and situations in which he uses all of his weapons is unparalleled in the sport, not to mention his ability to evade strikes through matrix-like head and body movement.
Knowing that the front kick is going to be the talk of the MMA universe, I figured I’d take a closer look into Silva’s technique on a biomechanical level.
The UFC is running a little vote on their site for the Top 100 Fights of all time. Because I don’t really have the time or care to go through the 181 fights they have posted on their site, I figured you’re probably in the same boat.
But that doesn’t mean that we can’t choose from a more select list of fights. Now I’m not going to say that these are the best fights to have ever taken place, but for me, they came to my mind first.
So here are 3 of my top MMA fights of all time for your viewing pleasure, in no particular order:
If you saw UFC 97 this past weekend, I want to know what your thoughts are on the Anderson Silva fight, because I’m not too sure what to think of it either. I’m kind of torn.
On one hand, as a fan, I see a guy who is giving 30% of what he is truly capable of. Really, he could’ve destroyed Leites if he wanted to, I think there’s no doubt about that. His movement and the speed and power of his strikes are no match for it seems any fighter in his division. But the great thing about MMA is that anything can happen and he’s set the bar super high, so sooner or later, someone will surpass him.
On the other hand, it just seems like he’s placing more emphasis on not getting hit than knocking his opponent out. I’d like to know exactly how many strikes (kicks, knees, punches, and elbows) have landed on Anderson Silva in his UFC fights. I know there aren’t that many.
Now as a fighter, if he’s interested in having a long career and staying healthy not only for fighting and for everyday life, not getting hit is a really good plan. It doesn’t take too many heavy shots to the head with 4 oz gloves to cause lingering, sometime permanent effects.
In a post-fight interview, he was talking about fighting the ‘perfect fight’. In a perfect fight, you would land all of your strikes on your opponent, and not get any points scored against you. If this was his goal, I think he did pretty good.
The last thought that I heard about the fight was from my friend Rich, who was in Montreal with me. He made a good point and said, “Anderson is the champ, and maybe he’s just thinking that you’ve got to come and take the belt away from me, so you’ve got to be the aggressor.”
I think this is a very good point. I don’t think it’s smart for a champ to put himself at risk if he doesn’t want to. Sure, it’s not the most exciting strategy from a fan’s point of view, but it is smart to do and it seems like it works.
