  • 1-arm Pushups: Great Exercise for MMA Fighters

The 1-arm Pushup is a great exercise for fighters because it integrates the whole body and works muscles in specific patterns applicable to mixed-martial arts.baby_1_arm_pushup

Now this exercise doesn’t replace things like bench presses and dumbbell presses, but it’s a great supplement to a training routine.

Being able to perform 1-arm Pushups in good form gives you 3 things that Bench presses don’t:

    1) Rotational / multi-planar core stability
    2) Shoulder stability / proper scapular movement
    3) Neuromuscular integration

The specific pattern of activation of the muscles in the 1-arm Pushup is very beneficial for being able to use your core when you’re throwing punches so you can deliver more explosive and powerful strikes.

Watch this video to learn how to do 1-arm pushups properly, and how to build up your ability to do them if you can’t do them now:

  • MONSTER Burger (had to share)

Up here in Southern Ontario, we’ve FINALLY gotten a bit of summer heat, and it feels great. I made dinner last night and had to do up a BBQ to celebrate, and I made the best burger of my life.

I had to take a pic and share it, I imagine it rating up there with seeing my first child born.

It was super tasty – and absolutely HUGE. Here’s what it looked like:

    monster-burger

Here’s what was on the burger:

    1. Grass-fed, organic ground beef (I only eat grass-fed beef from a local farm to avoid pesticides, hormones, & toxins)
    2. Bacon (kinda counteracts the healthy beef but I rarely eat it LOL)
    3. Lettuce
    4. Tomato
    5. Brick cheese
    6. Roasted red peppers
    7. Pickles
    8. Dijon mustard
    9. Diana’s BBQ sauce
    10. Sauteed mushrooms w/touch of Tamari (gives mushrooms amazing flavour)
    11. BBQ’d white onions
    12. Spices in the beef: montreal steak, oregano, thyme, fresh ground black pepper, touch of cayenne

This was a 2 patty behemoth – so I couldn’t really fit the whole thing in my mouth. Oh and there were some fresh cut baked potato chips on the side.

  • MMA Fitness Assessments Part 2

Had a lot of people put their results into the first fitness assessment, which measured upper body push strength and endurance, great job!

jordan-dunkSo now, here’s Part 2 of the assessments for you to try out.

We’ll be taking a look at your lower body strength, power, and power endurance with these 3 tests.

One of them will even tell us if you’re ready for the NBA or not.

I’m sure you can guess what it is.

Anyway – here are the 3 tests – let’s see what you got:

  • Strength and Conditioning Assessments

All throughout our childhoods, we’ve been administered tests to measure such things as our math skills (I killed these – thank you Chinese genetics!), reading ability, knowledge of history, geography, and more.

CB029645Pretty much every topic that we learned about, we were tested on.

Although some may argue that these tests don’t say much about our intelligence, they are definitely better than nothing.

After all, how do we know we’ve improved, if we don’t have a base level to compare against?

In terms of strength and conditioning for mixed-martial arts, it seems that testing yourself is not very common.

Instead, most guys are content to simply push themselves as hard as they can every workout and trust in blind faith that they’re improving their fitness for MMA.

Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

If you take MMA seriously, then you must keep an eye on your progress, to make sure your workouts are in fact working and that you’re getting stronger, more powerful, and improving your endurance.

  • Lazy post…

Yesterday I was filming for my new Advanced MMA Power program, and it ended up to be 5 HOURS STRAIGHT of filming strength and conditioning methods.

dvd-3d-cover-300px-wideI ended up hiring a guy who makes movies and has his own production company, so he was a bit of a perfectionist.

Needless to say, I’m still beat.

And that’s why I’m making a lazy post today.

So if you want to see some great pictures of rather nice-looking MMA girls, click the link below:

I’ll be back with normal content once I’m recovered.

  • 4 Critical Stretches for MMA Fighters

Stretching. Could there be anything more boring?

I don’t know anybody who really looks forward to stretching, myself included.

But I also don’t know anybody who doesn’t like how it feels after, and I don’t know any mixed-martial artist who doesn’t need to stretch.

    nice-stretch
This is my favourite stretch. Ever.

We definitely don’t want to waste our time since we’ve got so much to train, not to mention lives to live. Wasting time is one of my pet peeves – I have an impatience for sitting on hold, waiting in lines to buy something, or waiting for equipment when I’m training.

So that’s why I’m just going to show you in the video the 4 key stretches that every fighter MUST be doing. Anything else is just a bonus.

As always – I value your feedback and input – leave your comments below!
