  • 5 Tips for Faster Recovery from Workouts

For the FASTEST recovery from workouts, the first 2 factors I mention in the video combined with a properly designed strength and conditioning program are the keys.

If you’re following a workout program that beats you up and totally taxes your muscular, metabolic and nervous systems, no matter what you do, you’ll never achieve optimal recovery and you’ll walk around feeling sore and fatigued all the time.

Worst of all – your gains will come to a screeching  halt because you’re always overtrained and/or under recovered!

That’s why the first thing I talk about and the most IMPORTANT is to follow a properly designed program. Without it, none of the tricks in the world will help. Once you’re on that, put the 5 tips below to work for you:

I mention a few links in the video, here they are in order of appearance:

There are a lot of other great tips for faster recovery – this is just the recovery tip of the iceberg…

What good tips can you share?

  • Listen to Your Body, But Don’t Make Excuses!

Every Late August and into September, I ditch all core training.

It’s not because I’ve trained the core super hard in June and July to look good on the beach and now need a break.

    It’s because of this:

    ragweed

No, this isn’t a marijuana plant that I harvest and get baked on and do nothing, that’s not why I stop training the core.

It’s because I’m really allergic to ragweed and I can’t stop sneezing. I always sneeze at least 3 times, sometimes up to 5 times, and if my allergies get really bad, I’ll repeat this vicious cycle of maximal abdominal contractions every couple of minutes.

This last Friday was particularly terrible, so bad that I felt mentally foggy, my body was tired, and I was all stuffy and puffy-eyed. And I missed my scheduled workout.

But here’s what I did instead, and what you can do the next time you feel like crap but you’ve got a training session scheduled:

  • Foam Rolling for Faster Recovery

Foam rolling is a cool technique that is like giving yourself a massage. It can get out some trigger points that lead to muscular imbalances, pain, and worst-of-all: injury.

Check the video and add it in after your workouts to speed recovery time and decrease injury.

  • The Lost Ingredient to Recovery

After popping my rib grappling on Saturday, I decided to take Sunday off. That lead me to this post.

There’s one thing that a lot of fighters totally screw up, and that’s recovery.

Recovery is not just ‘not training’ but can mean a lot of things:

    – Enough quality sleep
    – Nutrition including adequate high quality fats and protein
    – Active recovery modalities such as massage and contrast showers

But one thing that a lot of people in general miss out on is mental recovery. From this I mean ‘unplugging’ yourself from all of the things on your mind and all of the madness of mainstream society like TV, newspapers, malls, and anywhere else your mind gets bombarded.

You probably don’t realize it but you’re being hit with 1000’s of messages everyday telling you to buy this or that this is the best offer.

You need a break from this once in a while! I decided to take a break by going for a long hike on a beautiful sunny Sunday. Check out some of the highlights:

    The entrance to the hike.

    Some nice light.

    Don’t worry, he’s not poisonous!

The hike even came with free snacks.

    My new ‘Walden Pond’.

So if you haven’t ‘unplugged’ yourself for a while, I urge you to go for a 1 hour or more hike, somewhere not so busy, and let your mind be refreshed, giving you an edge in training.
