  • 4 Critical Stretches for MMA Fighters

Stretching. Could there be anything more boring?

I don’t know anybody who really looks forward to stretching, myself included.

But I also don’t know anybody who doesn’t like how it feels after, and I don’t know any mixed-martial artist who doesn’t need to stretch.

    nice-stretch
This is my favourite stretch. Ever.

We definitely don’t want to waste our time since we’ve got so much to train, not to mention lives to live. Wasting time is one of my pet peeves – I have an impatience for sitting on hold, waiting in lines to buy something, or waiting for equipment when I’m training.

So that’s why I’m just going to show you in the video the 4 key stretches that every fighter MUST be doing. Anything else is just a bonus.

As always – I value your feedback and input – leave your comments below!

  • 7 Kettlebell Exercises

I just got back from the cottage this past weekend and had a great time. The weather was pretty good, but it’s a lot cooler than most July’s are. Not sure what’s going on there – global cooling???

Anyway I got some decent fishing in, I boated a couple of northern pike and a couple of largemouth bass, but nothing record breaking. Better luck next time.

For this trip, I brought a kettlebell up and shot a quick video for you showing some of my favourite KBell exercises.

  • Preventing Injuries

First off, being a loyal Canuck, I’d like to wish you all a Happy Canada Day!

Now with the patriotism out of the way, I had a funny experience playing SURGEON a couple days ago.

I was at a birthday party for  a buddy of mine (my BJJ cornerman Youssef turned 29) and my girlfriend was walking around in barefoot by the pool and this is what she got in her foot:

    spear1

OK – in reality maybe it was only abot 3 mm in length, but it still hurt.

But she let it sit there for a day and because of this, we get an important lesson.

  • Random Friday Thoughts

I am blatantly stealing the idea for Random Friday Thoughts from Eric Cressey, a very intelligent and effective strength coach who deals with a lot of baseball players and who I’ve learned a lot from (and continue to learn a lot from).

    1. “If you perform static stretching before working out, you’re going to get injured.”

If this were true then there would have been a lot more exercise injuries in the 80’s and 90’s as that’s what the dogma of the day was – to warm up, you do static stretching.

    aerobics-warmup
You'd better not workout after this static stretch – you might injure your anus.

But no, people weren’t exploding their muscles because they did a few stretches before working out.

Static stretching before workouts can be very useful if they’re used to inhibit a tonic muscle – in layman’s terms – if you have a muscle that works when it’s not supposed to, static stretching can shut it off, allowing the proper muscle(s) to be worked.

  • Cardinal Sin of MMA Training

I’m sorry father, for I have sinned.

prayI know I’m not supposed to be doing this, because it is evil, evil, EVIL!

    But I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself.

I tried to stop myself but couldn’t, even though everyone is saying that I’m wrong for doing it.

    Please, please, please, forgive me.

But before I’m damned, please give me 5 minutes to explain myself, I promise, once you see what I see, you might change your mind and forgive me.

  • Medicine Ball Training for MMA

If you’ve been reading my stuff or watching my videos, you probably know that I’m a huge fan of medicine ball training.

The 2 biggest reasons why I love medicine ball training for MMA is because:

    1. You can throw the ball, which allows you to train at max velocity (other tools like dumbbells or kettlebells you have to slow down and control)
    2. You can train all 3 planes of motion, especially the transverse plane, to develop your body in a way that’s very specific to what you need in mixed-martial arts

I’ve just posted 22 different exercises (plus more variations of each) in the members area on this site.

    Go check them out here:

  • Embarassing Incident You Can Learn From

I’ve got an embarrassing story to share, but it’s something we can all learn from to prevent one of the most dreaded type of injuries for mixed-martial artists: concussions.

    Concussions in MMA

If you’ve ever had a concussion, then you know the problems that can come along with it:

    • Dizziness
    • Headaches
    • Mental fogginess
    • Sensitivity to light

Not to mention the fact that you won’t be able to train when you’re experiencing these symptoms.

Well I’ve put together a little report that you can check out to help you prevent concussions. Now with MMA, the only way you’ll ever truly be able to fully prevent a concussion is not getting hit in the head, but because that’s impossible, you’ve got to do what you can to prevent them, which is what you’ll learn in this report.
