After a lifetime of manual labor jobs, loading planes, trains, and trucks, and heavy weight training for sports. I have very limited mobility in my shoulders, and constant pain in most movements. I’m told only option I have is complete replacement, but I’m not eligible because of my age (only 45). I’m hoping to not only improve my range of motion, but help reduce pain, and my dependence on pain meds.

I took up Muay Thai as a hobby, but it turned out to be a bad match for someone who can spend 6-10 hours a day on the computer: Forward neck and rounded shoulders worse. Scapular reach test turned out to be OK though. Not much worse than yours! So probably no rotator cuff problems. I took a break from Muay Thai and overhead barbell press, and I have been taking a yoga class for a month and was able to do a full bridge for a few seconds after not being able to even lift my shoulders off the floor before. It was such a great feeling to really feel a fuller range of motion. I want more of that. I score poorly on the FMS overhead squat test. Most of all I want to prevent serious problems in the future if I keep have to work on the… Read more »

Eric!
I’ve been thinking about you lately, wondering why I haven’t been receiving my newsletter?

So I sent an email to support@ericwongmma.com
But it got sent back?

Nevertheless!
Everything happens for a reason.
Because I searched for you on Google to find your website, started reading some of the stuff you have up and came across this subject and feel like you have the answer.

I’ve been dealing with chronic neck pain for about a year and a half,
It’s disabling, more mentally than physically as I’ve always been athletic.
I’ve seen dozens of physios, chiros, Drs
Done all the tests etc.
Yet none of them have asked me to do those 2 simple shoulder tests.
I’ve signed up to get the rest of this subject because I need answers asap!
Sorry for the life story.

Thanks Eric. My shoulder inflexibility overhead has always been an issue. Even though I’ve been expressing to my clients the dangers of static stretching for years, I can now look forward to the answers to my own tight shoulders.

I had the same surgery as Neil to repair a torn labrum after having chronic dislocations. Shoulder stability has been great but I recently began training BJJ and I’m looking for greater shoulder stability to prevent any injuries to that shoulder during rolling.

Neil

Hi Eric, Numerous shoulder dislocations have led to a Bankart repair where the torn Glenoid labrum was reattached to the capsule. Both shoulders have always seemed unstable, especially in any ‘open’ position. I’m terrified to move either joint anywhere near their limits in case they fall off again. Could rounded shoulders and the associated weaknesses have contributed to the problem even before I dislocated it the first time? Will SFS help? I first dislocated it canoeing and have given up karate & aikido and canoeing now. 🙁

left shoulder seems to be in good shape, the right exstremely tight. 40 years in the martial arts has taken it’s toll.

I am 41 and was exercising at home when I felt pain in my right shoulder. I was doing chest flies with elastic bands. I wen t to the doctor and had an MRI. He said I actually pulled my bicep tendon. My shoulder has pain that runs down the front center and extends to my elbow and I also feel pain in my right side neck up to my ear. The MRI showed that I have osteoarthritis in my shoulder. That little bone that pokes out just barely making a bump at the top of my shoulder is where the arthritis is, slightly sensitive to the touch. The MRI showed those small bones surrounded in white liquid which the doctor said was the arthritis. Not sure what to do…….trying to stay healthy for my family. 5’7″ 165 formerly in construction industry. Currently living in Barcelona.

I’m currently using the HFS and have seen an improvement. I’m an Arborist and climb all day in a harness which tightens up my hips

I had shoulder surgery 5 years ago for dislocation and had frozen shoulder after and really struggled with range of motion and getting strenght back, still have a lot of tightness and lost some range but it would be interesting to see what your programme could do for me.

I believe my industry is a gud target for both your programmes as our work is very labour intensive and requires a lot if stress on the body mostly hips and shoulders

I am eagerly waiting for this program to be published. When is the expected launch date? I would like to be able to do the Wheel pose.

Hey Eric, I’ve been following you for about a year. A couple issues I have. First I probably have the worst flexibility known to man. My hamstring and shoulder flexibility is awful which in turn restricts exercise movements. I’m an air traffic controller that sits behind a radar scope for about 5 hrs a day. I’ve become a NASM CPT about a year ago, and sometimes it’s embarrassing that I cannot demonstrate a particular movement.
2 nd my eight year old daughter is a gymnast. She’s been doing for about 5 years. He strength is great but also her flexibility needs improvement. I’ve been doing your hip flexibility exercises from previous videos and it has been helping. But long and tedious process. What ever it takes. Keep it up! Your an inspiration.

I had a minor shoulder surgery in June. This surgery kept me off of the mats(BJJ) and away from the weight room for months. I have been back in gym for a couple of months now and flexibility and constant shoulder pain issues continue. I also coach my son’s baseball team. Throwing the baseball really irritates my shoulder also. I also have problems with the rear squats like others have commented.

Hi Eric,
I currently have the HFS and work the routines (occasionally!).
I am 64, so don’t want to compete, but I still go to the local gym, ride mountain bike, walk the dogs etc.
I have always been very stiff jointed! short range of motion of limbs, therefore nowadays more prone to injury, aching joints, etc.
I think it’s time I concentrated more on ‘range of motion’ strength and functional mobility performance.
Over to you!!

I want to see if by using your program I can get rid of the pain in my upper chest, pec minor area that has plaged me for nearly 6 years now.

Thanks

Hi Eric, I have been doing static stretches for years but have found my shoulder mobility getting worse every year. I’m at a stage where I cannot do rear squats simply because I can’t get my arms on the bar behind me.

Cindy

I use your HFS and have had great results. Looking forward to your SFS so I can do different types of planks and lift any type of weight away from my body, such as lifting a gallon of milk to the refrigerator shelf, without causing pain and tendonitis in shoulder, biceps and deltoids.

Hey Eric, I am a yoga instructor and a functional movement buff. I have developed pain in my left shoulder and lost some range of motion. Physio and chiro have not helped. It has been over six months. Reaching my hand around my back to touch opposite scapula is the most obvious test showing my limitation, but it’s the restrictions on my everyday movement that really gets me down.

Marc Nagele

Thanks Eric– Your HFS system definitely helped me and I am looking forward to getting more mobile in the shoulders. I’m a powerlifter and my lack of flexibility is hindering me getting under the squat bar properly. Even though I hold several state and national records I could be squatting a lot more and improve my form with better shoulder flexibility. I was a definite fail on both the tests in this video.

These videos that came in my email made me realize how valuable your hip flexibility program is that I bought many months ago and never really made a plan for implementing. Seeing your explanations in shoulder flexibility and how to assess such and your Q AND A sessions made me aware how legitimate and authentic you are as a body trainer. I have both rounded shoulders and forward head and want to reclaim the healthy functional flexibility I have never had in hips or shoulder. Because of inflexibility and weakened power and stability because of static stretching, I injured my shoulder eight years ago and my hip six years ago and now both are compromising my health and interfering with me doing what I love, hiking, walking, biking and general physical work like gardening and housekeeping.

Hi Eric,

I hurt my right shoulder probably close to 20 years ago. It’s still tight and doesn’t have the full range of motion of the other so I’d like to get that full range of motion back.

Getting older has it’s drawbacks. After doing assesment noticed by thumbs point straight at each other. Too much pain when doing over shoulder and scapula reaches. I do body-weight and kettle bell exercises and have noticed a lot of shoulder pain doing most of them, especially push-ups and pull-ups/chin-ups. Looking forward to your next video.

I have rondes should, but my current issue is overhead limitation.perfect timing as today I decided my new challenge will be Wheel pose. I could also never hold hands together in the back as my doc would ask me to do for assessing mobility… Without doing anything

Hey Eric. I cannot express how stoked I am that you are putting this programme out! I have been in the NZ navy for 12 years, and have always had a requirement to do press ups as part of our fitness testing. Unfortunately the technique we were taught was incorrect (hands out wide, placing immense load on the shoulders) and has contributed to my shoulder dysfunction. Additionally, I got into instructing at Les Mills as a body combat instructor (group fitness, no contact) for three years, but had to give it up because my shoulder dysfunction had developed in to bursitis. I was experiencing shoulder pain after each class, and ended up seeing a physio for six months as I was experiencing massive neck pain as well. Basically I was a mass of tight and abnormal muscles in my torso and it all gave up. As a result I floundered… Read more »

Like most, I’m on a computer a lot and occasionally bad posture habits bring up minor nagging shoulder pains. Then I have to back off or alter my Muay Thai training. I want to have shoulder flexibility so I can be pain free, throw left hooks like I mean it, do push ups and train hard because training hard is way more fun than being sidelined with injuries and gettin a gut!

hi Eric I was able to do both back hand stretches but my left neck shoulder was sore after doing them, I took a pic of myself and I definitely think I have rounded shoulders, I’ve been in pain with this for 2 years now, I apply cold pack often to my neck shoulder area where trapezium muscle is, I’ve been to osteopath, chiropractors and physical therapists which helped for a day or 2, I was thinking about getting the cortisone injection, I’ve had to stop all kettle bell training and lifting weights as I’m terrified of doing more dan age and am just jogging and walking now. I use voltarol and ibuprofen often, went for a sports massage which made it worse more headaches followed many thanks for all your help Eric

Hi Irene, definitely follow Eric’s program, but as a supplementary I would reccomend reading or listening to the mind body prescription by DR. John E. Sarno.

As a city bus driver, in a seated position for the entirety of my shift, I have noticed that I am in a position where I round my shoulders constantly. I have also encountered rotator cuff issues as well. I do lift weights to help stay in shape and relieve stress and have encountered pain during exercises such as barbell bench press. Many of my colleagues have also complained of shoulder issues as well. I am hoping that you will be able to show us how to release some of these impingements and improve our flexibility.

Hi: My husband and I both did your Hip Flexibility Series starting a year ago and continue to use some of the sequences regularly. It’s made such a positive difference. Applying the same principles to shoulders makes so much sense. I have some impingement in both shoulders caused by bicep and pec tightness. This causes discomfort in my golf swing and limits my strength endurance in any shoulder weighted exercise (planks, weight machines, etc.). I am doing active stretching with some results, but would like to get to the root issues. Thanks.

WOW! Eric, the active assessments were very telling! I had a right shoulder injury over a year ago. Did therapy, etc., and I thought the flexibility was on track. Man, was I off!! Left shoulder is just ok, the right…UGLY!! I can’t wait to get into your shoulder flexibility routines. Just a thought…I went to a licensed physical therapist and a Chiropractor for my right shoulder injury and they informed me I was on track. I think I’m going to ask for a refund! 😉 Thanks SO MUCH Eric!!

Hey Eric,

I’m really looking forward to this. I partially tore a muscle in my right shoulder two years ago, and that shoulder has had limited ROM since. Now just a month ago, I felt something snap in my LEFT shoulder while doing incline presses, and now that shoulder is in pain whenever I put weight on it if it is more than 45 degrees from the body. So, considering I managed to wreck both my shoulders I reckon there’s something underlying there that I need to fix. I’ve got a slight forward head posture, thoracic kyposis, a bit rounded shoulders, and I absolutely did not pass any of the mobility tests you showed.

So, please hurry up!

Hello Eric! nice video. I am a high level 18 year old tennis player(div 1 next fall) Since last June I have dealt with several injuries in my upper body. over three months off due to tennis elbow, and after being back at 100% for only 3 weeks I got proximal bicep Tendonitis(osis). It was diagnosed as rotator cuff tendonitis by a physical therapist, but after 3 months I went to see a sports MD and he said it was bicep tendon which I believe to be much more accurate. I went to physical therapy for 10 sessions, but it was so expensive I had to stop, and I did not feel like they were completely efficient. Over 6 months into the injury, and I am able to practice a little bit, but there is nothing I want to do more than be able to give 100% I am completely… Read more »

Been using some of the suggestions for HFS and they do work. Gym instructor doesn’t know that dips are BAD so I don’t do them. Use of the HFS is helpful. (seeing Chiropractor) because of lack of flexibility in hips. I believe the Shoulder solution will also help.

Really great video. I like the simple tests. I know static stretching will not help with these mobility issues. I’ve been a fitness instructor for almost 6 years now and I’ve got into MMA for the past year and a half. I noticed some restrictions in my shoulder mobility and would love to get these cleaned up as I think it would increase power and speed.

I’m tighter than I thought with some of these, only my tris/lats are in the good range (people have problems finishing me with figure4s).

I sit down too much and want to prevent any further bad posture from happening for further down the line. I don’t know if this starts from my shoulders, but sometimes if I’m laying down on one arm, after a short while my little finger gets pins and needles and I have to move.

GF not impressed

I do a lot of computer work and am very right handed. I was in an automobile accident in which my right arm took the brunt of a right side car T bone by another vehicle. I was seated in the passenger (right) side at the time. I am waking up at night with my right hand in pain and lying on the right side puts my right arm and hand to sleep. Any help you can provide is much appreciated.

Eric-

I love all of your programs. I am a college lacrosse coach, and have many players who have benefited and some who I am hoping will benefit from what I have learned & continue to learn from you. The lack of hip flexibility that I see on a regular basis is HUGE – shoulders is becoming worse & worse with the excessive phone, tablet & computer use…combine that with the fact that our sport skill training leads to over use because of the constant throwing/shooting. I am always looking for ways to prevent/combat injuries and balance the girls I coach and myself. Thank you for your blog, and your workouts!! Kim
